明田汝成《西湖游览志·西湖总叙》：“西湖，故明圣湖也……汉时，金牛见湖中，人言明圣之瑞，遂称明圣湖。以其介于钱塘也，又称西湖。以其输委于下湖也，又称上湖。以其负郭而西也，故称西湖云。”
